Does my boyfriend really mean it or is he lying to me?

My boyfriend tells me that he thinks I'm really smart. But my whole life i've been called dumb, airhead, stupid, ditzy etc and I think he knows that I'm insecure because of it. Is he lying or could he really mean it?
