Can you grow flowers like the ones in a flower shop?

It takes a lot of know how, time & experience to do that. My nephew was a market gardener & sold his flowers to the Brisbane markets (Australia). He said it was too time consuming & gave it up. What is he doing now? He's a viticulturist(g grower) in his sister's vineyard!
